EKGs Q & A

What are EKGs?

An EKG is a noninvasive medical test that measures and records electrical activity in the heart.

EKGs are an effective diagnostic resource for individuals who experience an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) or other symptoms of a heart-related condition. The test can confirm or rule out heart muscle damage from a cardiac event and also be useful for monitoring the effectiveness of medications used to treat heart problems.

Direct Wellness RVA offers EKGs in-office for adults and adolescents. Grace uses the results of your EKG to design a treatment plan to improve your cardiovascular health.

EKGs and other diagnostic procedures are available for members through an affordable, monthly membership fee.

Why would I need EKGS?

You might need an EKG if you develop an irregular heartbeat or experience unexpected or persistent heart-related symptoms like:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath

Direct Wellness RVA also uses EKGs to monitor your heart’s function as part of your preventive healthcare plan. Routine EKGs can identify heart abnormalities early and before symptoms start, so you can get the proper treatment.

If you’re scheduled for surgery, Grace can use EKG technology to check your heart health and ensure you can tolerate surgery.

What happens during EKGs?

During your EKG at Direct Wellness RVA, you can expect to lie comfortably on an exam table. The medical staff attaches small, sticky patches (electrodes) to your chest, legs, and arms.

The electrodes connect to the EKG machine, which records information about the electrical activity of your heart while you rest. The test isn’t painful and typically takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

Grace reviews your EKG results to determine if you need additional testing. She also discusses any treatments you need to manage an underlying heart issue. Additionally, Grace can recommend diet and lifestyle modifications you can make to protect your heart and reduce risk factors for additional symptoms.

Follow-up visits are available to monitor your progress with treatment. You may need additional EKGs if you take certain medications or as part of your routine health screenings.
